Review by: Steven,On 02 Jan 2000
This collection of Lennon tracks has much to offer:
- there's the well-known demo 'It's not too bad'
- a few Beatle-era demos, but nothing to get excited about. A short electric demo take of Cry baby Cry is very nice, and definitely rare.
- The Two Virgins outtake is for the T.V. afficionados, but it demonstrates the sillyness involved in the recording of the album.
- Tracks 5-7 are available elsewhere in better sound quality and in a completer form.

- From the How ?... medley up to Sally and Billy we get to know John as he was working on Imagine. The demoes aren't really what you would rock 'n roll, but they are very pleasant to hear and particularly interesting. The main point about the Imagine album seems to be that he and Spector made up-tempo songs of quite a few slow, sometimes somewhat dull songs.
- Come togheter is a One-to-One-concert rehearsal fragment, with very little real playing. John instructs the bass player to take the album home and find out how Paul's part is played. Lennon admits that his former songwriting partner could only play 'basics'.
- Happy Girl is a Yoko demo, answered by John with I'll make... John slips into Cold Turkey, as the eerie feeling of the latter resembles strongly to this song. Nothing of Cold Turkey's sweaty ambiance, though.
- How do you sleep ? is another rehearsal take. The band isn't really trying to lay down a good take, so the feeling about this recording is very relaxed.
- It's so hard / I don't... are King Curtis overdubs, with John's instructions from the control room clearly audible.
- Intuition is a wonderful demo.
- I know is another demo, slightly hissy, but still very listenable. This is a favourite of mine.
- I know is an early mix, without the annoying country arrangement of the official release. The semi-acoustic intro is wonderful.
- Aisumasen is another early mix, featuring a superior guitar-duet finale lacking on Mind Games.
- Steel and Glass is an interesting, but not really exciting demo. John is thumping on his piano while he is looking for the right words.
- Walls and Bridges rundown is a fragment from John's radio shows. He comments on his latest album, with very little enthusiasm however. The sound is very hissy. John comments on Cry for a shadow and Flying.
- Mirror Mirror on the Wall is take 2 of the piano demos.
- Tennessee/Memories feature other variations on a well-known theme.
- Sally and Billy is a 1976 demo.
- She's a friend of Dorothy's should have been released on the Lennon Anthology. The spoken-word dialogue with Yoko is missing.
- The Boat song is a nice throw-away demo.
- Pedro the Fisherman is reputed to be a 1967 demo.
- Many rivers to cross Pt.2/My girl and Instrumental 1979 are instrumentals.
- Track 9 to track 17 are rehearsals, early takes and overdub sessions from 1980. On track 16 he briefly parodies I am the Walrus. Track 17 is a beatiful instrumental take of Woman, with John solo on guitar. The sound of this track is pretty disappointing.
- Woman (track 18) is an early mix with different backing vocals.
- Living on borrowed time is a different (but not very different) mix.
- I'm losing you is another early mix.
- Unlisted is a brief studio dialogue about chocolate doughnuts.

This collection features a host of otherwise unbooted recordings. Many 'new' discoveries have been lifted from this collection. It appears, however, that a few tracks have been edited to fit the entire collection on two cd's. This remains a real value-for money investment, which deserves repeated listenings. The tracks are arranged chronologically, and because of their composite nature (demos, studio, overdubs), this collection is a little less prestigious but just as entertaining as the 'Free as a bird. The Dakota Beatle demos (Pegboy)'-bootleg. I would certainly recommend it.
