In 1989, the Beach Boys were given their own TV series. Is was basically a variety show which highlighted the Beach Boys performing. They would have guests performing as well. There were three basic sources for the show:

1 - The Beach Boys performed a concert at the Pacific Amphitheater in Costa Mesa, CA, on May 27, 1989. While Brian Wilson was not involved in the Beach Boys concert this night, he did come on stage and performed three songs, one of which was never released. When Brian came on, the Beach Boys (Carl, Mike, Al and Bruce) would leave the stage and Brian performed with the touring band plus a few additional musicians. After Brian performed his three songs, he left the stage and the Beach Boys return.
While nearly every song was featured in the series, it was spread out over all eight episodes.

2 - "Club Kokomo" - In addition to the large concert, the Beach Boys appeared at various amusement parks. The crowd was much smaller and was about the equivalent of a live studio audience. It was set up as a club setting, although it was done outside during the day. Regardless of what amusement park they were at, it was called Club Kokomo. This is where the guests would perform. The guests included other artists, stand up comics, etc.

3 - "The Campfire Sessions" - The Campfire Sessions were recorded specifically for The Beach Boys Endless Summer TV series in 1989. It features Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston as well as family and members of the touring band. Carl and Jeff Foskett play acoustic guitars. They are sometimes joined by Al and Billy Hinsche on acoustic guitar as well. Mike Kowalski on bongos and Matt Jardine on percussion (mostly tambourine). Very reminiscent of The Beach Boys Party! Lp from 1965. Between songs, the Beach Boys reminiscence about the early days and some of their early songs.
Brian, who was under the care of Dr. Eugene Landy, is very active in both the songs and conversations. He seems very alert and... normal. That was not always the case around this time period.
While recorded all at one session, the Campfire Session was edited and shown in clips over all eight episodes of the TV series.

This DVD is sub titled "Best Of The Beach Boys" and only features the performances of the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson. It does not feature any of the guests that appeared on the series.

When Brian comes on, the Beach Boys (Carl, Mike, Al and Bruce) leave the stage and Brian performs with the touring band plus a few additional musicians. After Brian performs his three songs, he leaves the stage and the Beach Boys return.
This song would be Brian's sole contribution to the Beach Boys Still Cruisin' album, released three months later. The people in attendance at this concert were hearing this song for the first time.
There is a segment played over part of this featuring Brian as well as a couple of others talking about the recording of this song for the Still Cruisin' album.

Review by: Rob G.On 23 Feb 2015 at 08:05 CET
I really like this disc. It shows the Beach Boys performing in three very different settings.
The first one is the concert in CA. it's a large venue and what you would expect from a Beach Boys concert if you attended.
The second is Club Kokomo. While there is only one example of it here on this disc, this shows the Beach Boys in front of a much smaller crowd. A bit more casual than the big concert in CA.
The third is my favorite. The Campfire Sessions is just the Beach Boys, their families and the touring band members sitting around a campfire playing music and just having a good time. while it has a lot of similarities with the Party! album from 1965, it is very different. I always thought that the Party! album was a bit forced. They even overdubbed the party sounds over the actual music at a later time. The Campfire Session was more natural. You truly feel as though your just hanging out with the Beach Boys at a family bbq. They really seem to enjoy each others company.

I guess my only complaint would be that I wanted to see more of the Club Kokomo performances. There's only one on this disc.
