BBC radio deserves the credit it gets for broadcasting a huge trove of live Beatles performances, but on the television end of things, it was not the Beeb but the independent Granada TV that caught the Beatles first, if only by pure luck. The company’s film of the Beatles, shot at the Cavern on 22 August 1962 is the earliest professional footage of the band, and it captures them playing a song they never recorded commercially, “Some Other Guy.” Thereafter, the group made several appearances on Granada show, most notably “Scene at 6:30,” and all told, Granada is now sitting on about four and half hours of footage of the band.

On New Year's Day 1984, Granada broadcast a compilation of this footage in "The Early Beatles 1962-65," a program free of narrative overlay, and including not only its Cavern clip, but also a nice selection of lip-synched in studio performances. Included as well was some amusing repartee with the comedian Kenn Dodd, and a good deal of documentary footage.

The main offering here is that program as broadcast. But as bonus tracks, we offer the raw music clips from the show, directly from Granada’s archives, obtained on a recent visit by a crack team of Darthbabes, disguised as accountants. The song clips include timing leader and are free of some of the logo overlays or freeze frames used in the 1984 program. Also, we are pleased to present the Kenn Dodd segment complete, the 1984 version having been seriously truncated.

We have sequenced these in reverse chronological order for several reasons. First, the Dodd clip, not having been seen by most viewers since 1963, deserved pride of place. Second, the earliest bonus clip we had was silent (more in a second), and it made sense to put it last. All that being the case, it seemed best to work backwards toward the Cavern. That clip - well, it too begins slightly earlier and ends slightly later than what you’ve seen before, but alas, someone cut the sound right before the audience member yells, “We want Pete!” Pity. The Darthbabes swear they didn’t do it - nor, I hasten to add, did it happen on the Video Shack end, where the mastering and authoring were expertly done. To make up for that, however, we have included another unseen treat, Granada’s Cavern trims - that is, the silent footage shot at the side of the stage and elsewhere, to be used to give the performance clip some variety. Bits of this have been seen, edited into the main Cavern clip, but it’s interesting to see the reel in its unedited form.

This DVD is pretty nice to have. I have a VHS of the original broadcast which is of slightly better quality than what is presented here..but it's nice to have this in a digital form. The extras are very nice to have. Overall well worth picking up.

Great to see the full Ken Dodd interview at last. This is the first time the off-cuts of the Cavern footage surfaced so hats off for that!

My transfer of the 'Early Beatles' on the 'Mark Jones Video Collection Vol 2' IS slightly better quality than the version presented here from my 1st generation video of the original broadcast I made myself back in 1983. (http://www.bootlegzone.com/album.php?name=MJDVD002)
