Review by: Gary, gbeegle@frontiernet.netOn 09 Oct 2000
This second disc from the Barrier double set FOR THE OTHER HALF OF THE SKY is the better of the two discs in my opinion. This CD tracks the evolution of the song WOMAN,from demos to complete song. What is interesting here is the interaction between John and Jack Douglas in the studio.I have always enjoyed studio sessions between John and the musicians and producers, because you can get a real feel of how John went about creating his work.Highlights of this disc are most of the demos. The vocal booth recordings, where Johns voice is isolated from the instruments are also nice. The backing track of John just strumming his guitar is also wonderful, however it,like some of the tracks on disc one appear on the bag series LOST LENNON TAPES in better sound. On this disc there is tape hiss, the song is much clearer sounding on the LOST LENNON CD.The interplay between John & Jack Douglas also appears on the Bag series, but is much more complete on this Barrier CD,so that is a plus. The final 4 so!ngs are Yoko's WALKING ON THIN ICE,which was the song they were working on the night John died.I've always found it to be a very powerful song. One side note,if you own the CD FAMOUS DAKOTA TAPES & HEART PLAY SESSIONS,towards the end of that CD you can hear where JOhn discovered the growling guitar lick that he uses in this song. That was mid-august during the video shoot. On that CD,when he discovers it he makes the comment that the lick sounds nice and perhaps they can use it some place.Well, they do,on Yoko's song.I just wanted to point that out,as that tiny bit of creative genuis of Johns doesn't appear on this disc. Now back to the review of this CD.Once again,to hear the interaction between John & Yoko on these versions of WALKING ON THIN ICE is just amazing and worth the cost of the CD set.On the first version of WALKING ON THIN ICE,John and Yoko discuss the album cover for DOUBLE FANTASY,Yoko complains about a suggestion John had made about the way the musicians are playing!,and John makes more suggestions as far as the backbeat goes.It is great to hear how all these songs came together. There is a version of WALKING ON THIN ICE which appears on this CD,that sounds nothing like any other version. There is sampling used at the beginning, and all kinds of techno stuff in the mix.I would be interested to know if this is an outfake or the real deal.If it is the real thing, then John & Yoko were way ahead of their time once again. If anyone knows anything about this version,I'd be interested in finding out more about it.Of the two CDs in this series, this one beats disc one by a mile.It is a great CD,and overall this is a great double set. This is the second in a series from Barrier, which covers the DOUBLE FANTSY/MILK & HONEY sessions. The first in the series was ITS HARD TO BE BUTTERFLIES,which I also recommend searching out as it to is wonderful and well worth the bucks.I look forward to more Barrier releases of this type as it truly is facinating stuff to !hear overall.

Core collection Lennon material from Double Fantasy / Milk and Honey sessions. Quality of recordings and packaging superb. This release also contains a lot of material not available elsewhere.
