1989 was a busy year for the Beach Boys. Still riding high on the success of Kokomo, both the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson were just months away from releasing new albums, Still Cruisin' and Brian's self titled solo debut album. They were also just starting a new tour along with Chicago.
During this hectic time, the Beach Boys hosted their own TV series simply titled, The Beach Boys Endless Summer. They recorded three different performances in three very different settings. The first was a large venue at the Pacific Amphitheater in Costa Mesa, CA, on May 27, 1989. While Brian Wilson was not involved in the Beach Boys concert this night, he did come on stage and performed three songs, one of which was never released. When Brian came on, the Beach Boys (Carl, Mike, Al and Bruce) would leave the stage and Brian performed with the touring band plus a few additional musicians. After Brian performed his three songs, he left the stage and the Beach Boys return.
While nearly every song was featured in the series, it was spread out over all eight episodes.

Additional performances were recorded at the Universal Studios Hollywood amusement park in Los Angeles CA. It was set up as a club setting, although it was done outside during the day. The crowd was much smaller and was about the equivalent of a live studio audience.

A third performance was recorded specifically for The Beach Boys Endless Summer TV series in 1989, commonly referred to as The Campfire Session. It features Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston as well as family and members of the touring band. Carl and Jeff Foskett play acoustic guitars. They are sometimes joined by Al and Billy Hinsche on acoustic guitar as well. Mike Kowalski on bongos and Matt Jardine on percussion (mostly tambourine).

The show also featured guest artists. Some were well know popular acts while others were lesser known and trying to make it big. In addition to musical acts, stand-up comics were featured.

A total of eight episodes were aired.

Reviews

Review by: Rob G.On 01 Mar 2015 at 06:34 CEST
A great set. I really enjoyed this entire series. I especially like the fact the it's the entire episode (minus commercials). The performances by the guest artists are lip synced, But all the Beach Boys performances are live.
This is a VHS transfer but it's pretty good. To the best of my knowledge, none of these performances have ever been released in any form (VHS, DVD).
I was surprised to see how much Brian was involved in this series. He is a very active participant in the Campfire Sessions as well as the Club Kokomo performances. While he was not on stage with the Beach Boys in the California concert, he did come on stage and sing three solo songs, although only two were shown in the series.
This is definitely a must have.
