This concert was part of a live simulcast on national television and radio entitled The Spirit of America Spectacular. It originated from the site where the Queen Mary is permanantly docked in Long Beach, CA. and was hosted by DJ's Wolfman Jack and Charlie Tuna. The show included performances by other bands, Rick Springfield, Three Dog Night, and Pablo Cruise. The Beach Boys had performed in Washington, D.C. the day before and then flew back to California for this performance. This was during the period when Carl was not performing with the band and was touring solo. During the show, Charlie Tuna read a telegram from Vice-President George Bush complimenting the band on their 20 years of making beautiful music.

Beach Boys present:

Mike Love
Al Jardine
Brian Wilson
Bruce Johnston
Dennis Wilson

Backup band included:

Ernie Knapp
Adrian Baker
Mike Meros
Bobby Figueroa
Ed Carter

Great show. Carl's not there but brother Brian is, singing his parts (God Only Knows, Good Vibrations, etc).

In My Room and Fun Fun Fun are ruined because of the commentary.

It's often been said that Dennis wasn't that great of a drummer, at least in the studio. But this concert shows that he makes an excellent live concert drummer.

One interesting note, Ed Carter plays electric guitar throughout this concert instead of bass. He even plays lead guitar on a couple of songs. Go Ed!

I remember watching this show live on TV at the age of 12 and it was hell waiting through all the other artists to do their set before the Beach Boys came on finally. This concert is a must own for the hardcore fan because it wasn't a typical show as Carl wasn't there(Big loss!!)but both Brian & Dennis are. Adrian Baker handled all the falsettos during this show and they are horrible. I say this because I generally liked his falsettos years later when he again toured with the group. Brian's singing of God Only Knows and Don't Worry Baby is like a train wreck that you can't look away from as his voice was in no condition to hit his old falsetto singing style. Once he shifted to a lower key it was much better(I love his voice these days!). The vocal blend is just not there in this show as it was years later when Carl came back and mede the guys rehearse till vocals were perfect. Good quality video for the early 80's for sure
