RM3 Take 15 - Mono Copy #2
4 Sep 1962
SS.PM1.01.15.RM3
The Beatles
Released on:
CD: EMI CDP 7 90044 2 Past Masters 1 1988.

Ringo on drums. At the end of 1962 the original master tape was lost, and replaced by "Love Me Do (version 2)", with Ringo on tambourine. Both Rarities albums (UK & US) used a version tranfered from a 45rpm vinyl owned by EMI. This became the definitive mix until 1982 when a collector made a better transfer and sent it to EMI. This immediately became the master, and has been used ever since.

Recorded on two-track tape and perfected in around 15 takes.

The Beatles
UK mono mix, edit of take 8 & unknown edit pieces. Released on:
UK: Parlophone R5015 single 1963;
UK: Parlophone PMC 7016 Oldies 1966;
US: Vee Jay VJ 522 single 1963;
US: Vee Jay VJ 581 single 1964;
US: Vee Jay VJLP 1085;
US: VJSR 1085 The Beatles and Frank Ifield on Stage 1963.
CD: EMI CDP 7 90043 2 Past Masters 1 1988;
CD: EMI CDP 7 97036 2 The Beatles 1962-1966 1993.

Brennan: Capitol missed this song somehow so the Vee Jay issues were the only US release until 1973. Vee Jay did not have the stereo mix and used the mono version on the stereo LP VJSR 1085 (Thank You Girl is also mono there). US had to wait 1973 and the release of "1962-1966" to have this song in stereo.

The Beatles
Released on:
UK: Parlophone R5055 single 1963;
UK: Parlophone PMC 7016 Oldies 1966;
US: Swan 4152 single 1963;
CD: EMI CDP 7 90043 2 Past Masters 1 1988.

The sonic restoration by Peter Mew, made originally for the EP set in 1992, sounds much better than this version. The edits became much more noticeable in the first CD appearance in 1988. There is no 'true stereo' mix of this song.

Taped on two-track, it proved surprisingly complex to make, the master tape being a complicated edit from a number of takes.

UK: PCM 1001 Rarities 1978-79;

US: Swan 4182 single 1964;
CD: EMI CDP 7 90043 2 Past Masters 1 1988.

The harmonica is an overdub so it must be a 2d generation tape (at least). The master tape of I'll Get You is officially lost, but some say it was stolen in 1963 and still exists. There is no "true stereo" mix of this song.

Released on:
UK: Parlophone PCS 7016 Oldies 1966;
UK: Apple PCSP 717 The Beatles 1962-1966 1973;
US: Capitol SV-12245 20 Greatest Hits 1982;
CD: EMI CDP 7 90043 2 Past Masters 1 1988;
CD: EMI CDP 7 97036 2 The Beatles 1962-1966 1993.

This is the fourth mix of this song, the third in stereo, made in November 17th, 1966. The first stereo mix was made in October 1963, but was released only in an Australian 45 in 1976(!). The second mix was made in June 1965, but released only in Europe.

UK: Parlophone SGE 1 (EP) 1981;
CD: EMI CDP 7 90043 2 Past Masters 1 1988.

The 1963 stereo mix was used for the first time for two single reissues in 1976, but for some reason the compilers of Love Songs in 1977 either could not find it or did not know it existed, and instead made yet another mock stereo version.

This mix was specially made to this release. It's a mono/stereo mix made from a true stereo mix from March 12th 1964 and released on:
Germany: Electrola STE 83 659 Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand 1963;
Germany: Odeon STO 83 756 Something New 1964;
US: Capitol ST 2018 Something New 1964;
UK: Parlophone PSLP 261;
UK: PCM 1001 Rarities 1978-79.

Following the lead of "Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand", this mix was specially made for this release. It's based on a 'true stereo' mix made in March 12th 1964 and released on:
UK: Parlophone PSLP 261;
UK: PCM 1001 Rarities 1978-79;
US: Capitol SHAL-12060 Rarities 1980;

Because the master tapes of She Loves You were missing already, this is an all new recording and not just overdubbed vocals.

The good doctor has done it again! This and volume two sound far better
than the official releases which always sounded a bit flat. Check them out!

Poppycock! The sound is identical to Capitol's Past Masters (which wasn't so bad, by the way). I'd guess the good Dr. tried to "warm it up" a bit, make it sound less digital, but I've A/Bed them, and my ears can discern no difference. But that doesn't mean there aren't many worthwhile DESS CDs; it only means that this isn't one of them.
Review by: majomorOn 10 Feb 2013 at 21:05 CET
When this was first released,I was given it as a gift on vinyl.I already owned the cds and was really surprised at how much better the vinyl sounded.As usual,the doc's transfer is nigh well indistinguishable from the original lp.Is it essential? That's debatable,but to my ears it's noticeably superior to the officially released cd...
