Concert
Hamburg, Star Club
31 Dec 1962
C.621231.03
The Beatles
The two Hamburg Performances of A Taste Of Honey feature many resemblances yet they are completely different.
They both feature one of the boys (John ? Ringo ?) singing "Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Baaa" before the song.
They both feature private jokes by the Beatles or the audience during the song and at one time (on the unedited version) this makes Paul laughing while singing.
However, the two versions are completely different because one of these has an extra verse that is unique on all the survived versions of the song.

This version is in fact an edit of two (or more ?) versions.
The spoken introduction by Paul is completely different than on the unedited version although some parts are common to both versions.
Star Club, Hamburg

Probably w/o extra verse

Review by: Bill S., django6@lycos.comOn 12 Jan 2001 at 21:38 CEST
This Russian release is on the same label that
did the 2-on-1 CD reissues of out-of-print George
Harrison albums. While everything on this album
is VERY familiar to anyone who would visit this
website (and almost everything on it has been
issued legitimately!), it is a nice 79-minute
collection of (mostly) Beatles music, ranging from
the Sheridan sides, to the Decca audition tapes, the
1960 Liverpool "living room" recordings, the
Star-Club live recordings, and the early BBC broadcasts.
While the music would rate a 10 in my book, the
mediocre rating reflects the fact that this is
just a clever pirate repackaging of familiar material
for an unfamiliar market. I hope some Russian teen
who buys this album feels the same sense of excitement
that I did when I first heard the Star-Club tapes
or "My Bonnie" or the haunting cover of "Soldier of
Love."

The Tony Sheridan tapes are pretty weird, mainly when there's Tony Sheridan singing. Most of the bonus material is excellent. Besame Mucho and How Do You Do It sound more superior on Anthology 1. A Taste Of Honey is in pretty poor quality. The BBC recordings are good, and you get to hear stuff cut off of Clarabella on Live At The BBC. A Shot Of Rhythm And Blues sounds different than the Live At The BBC version. Should not be lacked by a true Beatles collector.

I mix of several different pieces of BEATLESS from the early days. The Sheridan tapes, a couple of songs from the QUARRYMEN CD, a couple of songs from DECCA, some LIVE AT BBC, and so on. THis is like a BEST OF, for material that is best, had complete, if you can find it. IF not, it is fun to hear the 1960 version that Mick McCartney recorded in Paul's living room, of songs like I"LL FOLLOW THE SUN, ONE AFTER 909, and HELLO LITTLE GIRL. More of those songs, are on ANTHOLOGY ONE as well. Stuart Sutcliff is suppost to be on those 1960 tapes, but i can't hear him. YOu can hear enough, to hear the BEATLES gestation period, when they were like any high school garage band, with high expectations. Except even in this earliest period, before HAMBURG, or even having a drummer, the TALENT IS THERE. I would have rather have heard more of the 1960 tapes, and less BBC or TONY SHERIDAN. But then again, this is part of the legend.
