From Doc's announcement:

This is part of a new Dr. Ebbetts vinyl series – the red Japanese mono vinyl collection – or simply put, the "red monos". These additions to the Ebbetts canon are sourced from the original series 1982 Japanese red mono vinyl LPs, considered by many to be among the very best representations of The Beatles’ original mono catalogue.

Another good job. The mono mix of the album was never amazing (just listen to the mix of "Help!"), but this improves upon it slightly. "The Night Before" is a highlight, with Paul's voice really booming and the keyboard sounding great. Not much else to say... for the mono version of this album, this is the one to get.

Yeah, well I never bought the Japanese Red Wax box when it came out in '82. I'd just spent a fortune for the MFSL box (so glad I did, as, overall, it's still the best sounding stereo Beatles on the planet), and, back then, I just really didn't appreciate mono. So I don't know how the actual vinyl Red Wax would sound on my system. But I can tell you this: I bought all of these "Red Wax" releases from Dr. Ebbets, all in one shot, because I was so disappointed in the EMI 2009 Mono Box. All of them sound a bit off, like there is a slight phasing. But the worst of the lot, no doubt is this one. It sounds abysmal, and I'm surprised, as the quality of the DESS releases is normally very good.

So, if you aren't satisfied with the EMI Help mono remaster, don't look here. You'll be bitterly diappointed.

I know the DESS releases are usually very true to the original vinyl sources, so I'm going to assume that these "Red Wax" mono reissues are incredibly overrated. The sound in shrill and thin, with very poorly defined low end. The DESS U.K. mono is much, much better, but still not really great. I was hoping we would finally get a decent Help mono version with the EMI mono Box, but that was also very disappointing (really rolled off high end, and still not great low end definition). So, I guess it's just not meant to be.

Hmmmm, Lets see. You can get this or buy the new 2009 Remastered disc taken right from the master tapes done by real sound engineers. All such releases are now Obsolete!

To gordonfp:

If you're not satisfied with either Dr. Ebbetts transfer or the new 2009 EMI remaster of the mono Help!, then do this, go buy the actual vinyl copy of the album. It's going to be worth a lot of money though.

Thanks for your useful and detailed review. Why the incoherent rating ("It sounds abysmal", but you rate it 5 stars?!).
