The most complete collection of BBC Beatles performances.
This is the first CD out of 9 (+1 if you consider HERE WE GO from the same publisher).

This CD includes (when available) the following programmes (taken from the liner notes):

"Teenager's Turn (Here We Go)"
March 8, 1962

NA. Hello little girl
1. Dream Baby
2. Memphis Tennessee
3. Please Mister Postman

"Here We Go" was a programme recorded before a live audience, and the Beatles took part to four shows. This is an absolutely essential session; their first radio broadcast, the first live show which has been conserved, the only Beatles recording of "Dream Baby" and the only live performances of "Memphis" and "Please Mister Postman". Also, it is one of the very few available shows with Pete Best on drums. The tape which survived is unfortunately of inferior quality.

-----

"Here We Go"
June 15, 1962

4. Ask Me Why
5. Besame Mucho
6. A Picture of You

The last available recording with Pete Best on drums. Again the tape which has been preserved has an inferior quality.

-----

"Here We Go"
October 26, 1962

NA. Sheila
NA. Love Me Do
NA. A Taste of Honey
NA. P.S. I Love You

-----

"The Talent Spot"
December 4, 1962

NA. Love Me Do
NA. P.S.I Love You
NA. Twist and Shout

-----

"Here We Go"
January 25, 1963

NA. Chains
NA. Please Please Me
NA. Ask Me Why
NA. Three Cool Cats

-----

"Saturday Club"
January 26, 1963

7. Some Other Guy
NA. Love Me Do
NA. Please Please Me
8. Keep Your Hands off my Baby
9. Beautiful Dreamer

The first of ten appearances on Saturday Club. This programme was set up in 1958, offering a mix of pop, jazz, country, rock.
Being the only chance of hearing this kind of music, it soon gained a great popularity in Great Britain, and was an essential promotional medium for any artist. The Beatles took this opportunity to present their brand-new single, "Please Please Me", together with their first one. These two tracks are not currently available, however the rest of the programme features three very interesting items, two of which have never been recorded elsewhere.

-----

"The Talent Spot"
January 29, 1963

NA. Please Please Me
NA. Ask Me Why
NA. Some Other Guy

-----

"Parade of the Pops"
February 20, 1963

NA. Love Me Do
NA. Please Please Me

-----

"Here We Go"
March 12, 1963

NA. Misery
NA. Do You Want To Know a Secret?
NA. Please Please Me
NA. I Saw Her Standing There

-----

"Saturday Club"
March 16, 1963

10. I Saw Her Standing There
11. Misery
12. Too Much Monkey Business
13. I'm Talking About You
14. Please Please Me
15. The Hippy Hippy Shake

This show was broadcast live, a rarity for "Saturday Club", because one of the Beatles had a severe cold the day the recording was scheduled. Although it predates of just a week the release of their first LP, the group played three cuts out of it, the remaining songs being rock classics.

-----

"On the Scene"
March 28, 1963

NA. Misery
NA. Do You Want To Know A Secret?
NA. Please Please Me

-----

"Easy Beat"
April 7, 1963

NA. Please Please Me
NA. Misery
16. From Me To You

Only Track 3 is available, although it is possible that also the other two numbers are in the hand of some Beatle collector. It was taped in front of a live audience, thus it features the only live appearance of "Misery".

-----

"Swingin' Sound"
April 18, 1963

17. Twist and Shout
18. From Me To You

The only appearance in the live concerts from the Royal Albert Hall broadcast by the BBC in 1963.

-----

"Side By Side"
April 22, 1963

NA. Side By Side
NA. I Saw Her Standing There
NA. Do You Want to Know A Secret
NA. Baby It's You
NA. Please Please Me
NA. From Me To You
NA. Misery

-----

"Side by Side"
May 13, 1963

19. Side by Side Theme
NA. From Me To You
20. Long Tall Sally
23. Thank You Girl
21. A Taste of Honey
22. Chains
24. Boys

The first two "Side by Side" programmes were taped the same day. The title track was played by the Karl Denver Trio, with John and Paul adding their vocals to Karl Denver's. The backing track was used for all three of the Beatles appearances, with a different voice-over by John Dunn. All the songs here included, with the exclusion of "Long Tall Sally", had already been released; these versions are played in arrangements nearly identical to the released ones. Track 2 is not available.

-----

"Saturday Club"
May 25, 1963

25. I Saw Her Standing There
26. Do You Want to Know a Secret
27. Boys
28. Long Tall Sally
29. From Me To You
30. Money (That's What I Want)

Their third "Saturday Club" appearance features songs from their first LP, plus two tracks which were later to be released, "Long Tall Sally" (one of Paul's favourites, see above) and "Money (That's What I want)", which only appeared on a Beatles
disc in November 1963.

-----

"Steppin Out"
June 3, 1963

31. Please Please Me
32. I Saw Her Standing There
NA. Roll Over Beethoven
NA. Thank You Girl
NA. From Me To You
NA. Twist and Shout

Only the first two tracks seem to have been preserved, in comparatively inferior quality; this is the first BBC performance of Chuck Berry's "Roll Over Beethoven" and prefates it's official release on the Beatles' 2nd LP by about 5 months.

Review by: Bob McDonnell, BobMcD01@aol.comOn 26 Feb 2000
Of all the unofficial Beatles recordings, the BBC tapes are my favorites. Although many of the tracks were released in better quality on the official release, this set remains the definitive collection since it compiles every available tape of every show in chronological order. It is an extremely attractive box that includes one of the best and most informative books that I have ever seen in any box set!
Of all my 100+ Beatles bootlegs, this is the one I cherish the most.
Review by: Jim Coburn, jcgolf44@aol.comOn 26 Apr 2000
This gets my vote for best bootleg ever! Slowly but surely, slightly better sounding versions of BBC material has been showing up on various CD's, about one hours worth, since this sets release. It would be great if "Great Dane" would reunite just once and release that material so we fans could add it to our box sets. Sound quality varies from fair to excellent, but the packaging and booklet are top notch. Buy it if you can find it! Don't waste your money on a cheep imitation copy, pay the price for an original.
