Review by: Paul Galfano, harricart@aol.comOn 10 Jul 1999 at 21:38 CEST
Definitely not worth the $40 I paid for it. Some interesting bits, an "outfake" as I'm told, but mostly a lot of stuff e've already seen on other bootlegs.
Even if you've never bought a bootleg and you want a good intro...PLEASE bypass this. The Good Bits: Bad To Me (Lennon Demo), That Means A Lot (early takes), Yesterday (Live 66/Candlestick Park), Goodbye, and Two Of Us (electric similar to version in "Let It Be" film).
Other than that, there's a tune here- Oh, I Need You- that's simply not the Beatles, and Happiness is a Warm Gun is purported by Sulpy and Belmo and other Beatle scholars to be an "outfake." What gives here? Boy, did I really waste my money. The Beatles, however, will never give their money-get it?

The three official "Anthology" double CD have some "unofficial" sequels...
The double CD "Anthology Plus" is the first one. It was followed by another double CD "Anthology More" and then a single CD "Anthology Extra" (and probably some others I don't even know of). Do we have to draw some conclusions on the fact that the last one was a single CD ?
One has to note that the packaging of each of these albums is exactly like the official releases, even the booklet.

8 minute version of "It's All Too Much" and Paul vocal of "She's So Heavy" make this disc worthwhile. Although both have appeared before, it's nice to have these in one place and both are in best yet sound quality.

I was very impressed with this 2 cd set-I didn't have most of the material, so indeed it did help suplement the Anthology's. I was disapointed because my copy did not have the booklet. My copy was most likely a cdr.

I want you and Oh i need you are OBVIOUS fakes and certainly not the beatles. This was obvious when these tracks appeared on the "rough notes" bootleg years ago.

Same as disc one. It is what it says a companion piece to the official release. There are some nice bits and the quality is great. A good starting point.

It's A great bootleg for some of the more "hardcore" collectors, but overall very good. The only reason it scored so low is that on the song "Christmas Time Is Here Again", two of the four beatles little speach snippets are missing (Check the anthology 1 single to see what I mean)

Otherwise, great!

P.S. I wouldn't've paid $40 dollars for this, but then again I don't buy bootlegs. ;-)

Check out the drumming on I Want You...If that's Ringo, I'll eat my computer...sounds more like Mitch Mitchell! No way Ringo would play like that. And really it doesn't sounds like McCartney at all to me!

JUST A COUPLE HERE, otherwise found elsewhere
1. they turned on all the tracks for this mix!
23. is John not Paul, not fake, and good.

Brief update; I found out that the odd thing in the end of "The End" is a weird demo recorded by the Beatles in '64 called "Rockin' and Rollin'". As to what it's doing here and not on disc 1, I dunno. As to why it's pasted onto the end of The End... god knows.
Granted, now that I know it's real, that doesn't change the uselessness and misplacedness. My score stands.

I was listening to this in the car on a drive yesterday. Could do with a little upgrading now as bits and pieces on here have turned up in better quality, notably the 'Norwegian Wood' and 'That Means A Lot' segments. Also, why they faded out and come back in on the jam at the end of 'She's A Woman' I'll never know (the one where Ringo goes "We got a song and an instrumental there"). Good compilation but, like I said, some bits could do with an upgrade, graft them in from other boots. I hate listening to stuff knowing that they are in better quality on another disc.

A enjoyable hearing with this 2 Disc Set. I don`t want anymore say about the strange I Want You and I Need You versions (for me no Beatles tracks!), but many Beatlegs are having this tracks, too. I didn`t like tracks form the offical Maxi CDs of the Beatles are included here, that`s againts every Copyright. But I like listen to this Set and a few tracks are pretty rare.

An excerpt from Mark Lewisohn's "The Beatles Recordings"

"Saturday 22 February"
"Trident Studios..." "...:time unknown. Recording: 'I Want You..." "...(takes 1-35), P: Glyn Johns. E: Barry Sheffield..."

"There was, at best, a fine dividing line between the end of Get Back and the beginning of sessions for what was to become Abbey Road. Although work on the latter did not begin in earnest until July, a number of that album's songs were well under way by that time."

"One was 'I Want You', a fine John Lennon song begun now with 35 takes of the basic track and John's guide vocal (one experimental take was sung by Paul McCartney), almost completed in April and finally finished in August..."

Not sure what to believe, but I thought I'd drop that in.
