The Beatles
The two Hamburg Performances of A Taste Of Honey feature many resemblances yet they are completely different.
They both feature one of the boys (John ? Ringo ?) singing "Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Baaa" before the song.
They both feature private jokes by the Beatles or the audience during the song and at one time (on the unedited version) this makes Paul laughing while singing.
However, the two versions are completely different because one of these has an extra verse that is unique on all the survived versions of the song.

This version is in fact an edit of two (or more ?) versions.
The spoken introduction by Paul is completely different than on the unedited version although some parts are common to both versions.
Star Club, Hamburg

Probably w/o extra verse

Review by: Paul Galfano, harricart@aol.comOn 10 Jul 1999 at 21:38 CEST
Definitely not worth the $40 I paid for it. Some interesting bits, an "outfake" as I'm told, but mostly a lot of stuff we've already seen on other bootlegs. Even if you've never bought a bootleg and you want a good intro...PLEASE bypass this. The Good Bits: "Bad To Me (Lennon Demo)," "That Means Alot (early takes)," "Yesterday (Lve/66/Candlestick Park)," "Goodbye," and "Two Of Us (electric similar to version in "Let It Be" film)." Other than that, there's a tune here-"Oh, I Need You"-that's simply not the Beatles, and "Happiness is a Warm Gun" is purported by Sulpy and Belmo and other Beatle scholars to be an "outfake." What gives here? Boy, did I really waste my money. The Beatles, however, will never give their money-get it?

The Liverpool stuff is new to disc or a major upgrade from Anthology 3. A good disc worth seeking out, it complements Anthology with all the bonus tracks from released singles included in this set.
Review by: Graham Small, clsmall@bellatlantic.netOn 22 Apr 2000 at 21:38 CEST
It is what it says a compliment to the anthology series. If you are new to bootlegs this would be a great starting point. It gives a nice example of all formats (live, demo and studio variations). If you've been collecting for some time the sound quality should be refreshing.

I _am_ new to Beatles bootlegs, and yield to the experience of others. However, I'm glad I have this... the Strawberry Fields Orchestral Score is very nice, and I had never heard the 'Not Guilty (Demo)' before. The disappoitment is that so many tracks are in mono. (I didn't want to supply a rating - the software forced me - 5 was the best number I could think of!)

Pleasant enough listen but too many fakes. I suspect that probably the liverpool tapes and definitely the I want you/oh I need you aren't actually the beatles at all. The latter two aren't even good fakes. A closer listen would probably reveal even more dubios recordings.
Review by: Alessandro Marinho, taj.mahal@uol.com.brOn 28 Oct 2000 at 21:38 CEST
I have to say, this is a very nice example of anthology itself, the first three tracks(CD1)are what we really expected from 1960, and , YES, It's The Beatles playing. All this talk about outfakes seems to be getting to people, It's not because there are some, that the whole lot is going to be like this, for example, people always say It's unlikely that Paul had switched vocals with John, but, what about the great version of GET BACK, found on this album(CD2)and sung by John???I even have a version of I'm so tired sung by Paul !!!What do you guys have to say about It?
Actually, they really enjoyed a little switching, mainly at the end of their careers. Most of the album shows a real good sound quality, and the I want you - I need you outfakes don't hurt this album at all!As a matter of fact, I want you reminds me of Paul's voice sometimes, but Oh!I need you is really pushing us to the edge of believing....By the way, Happiness is a warm gun is an outfake?!?!?!?The person who said that, should give up listening to Beatles music, John Lennon's voice is there with harmonizing guitars overdubbed by George, later taken off in favor of a heavier approach. Please don't let people say craps like that about things they think they know, but, in fact. They don't!!!!In a nutshell, It's a start, better than the official one. There are things here you won't find anywhere else, the version of Here There and Everywhere, is amazingly beautiful, It was not an album made in a hurry, Invasion people seemed to have put their minds to It, the only negative points on this one are the inclusion of the tiring Esher tracks, which are already found in million different places (how can I still put up with the Esher tapes??).If you come across this one, get It.Lots of BEATLES rare stuff on It!
Review by: Pasadena,On 14 Nov 2000 at 21:38 CEST
just a quick note to the last review. You may THINK you have a version of "im so tired" sung by paul, but that was confirmed to be a fake and not the beatles a long time ago. That first appeared on a vinyl bootleg in the late 70s.
Review by: David Scott, dasjr@hotmail.comOn 26 Nov 2000 at 21:38 CEST
I've heard this disc, and it's not bad, save for some fakes and flaws here and there. Here's summary of tracks: The 1960 demos are here in best quality yet; the I Saw Her outtake has a (presumably) non-Beatle German count-in grafted on (badly) to the beginning; the bootlegger's "Help" composite version is ok, but as needless as certain composites on the official Anthologies (i.e. Yes It Is); tracks such as Flying fade in at the beginning for no good reason; Happiness is an outfake derived from the official and monitor mix versions; the Let It Be session medley is bits of Get Back session songs (which I would have gladly replaced with one or two complete session tracks); I Want You/I Need You are by a band called Mortimer (read this on Erek's page); and the bonus track is a mix of Reelin and Rockin in which the bootleggers combined two demo versions (of the same take) to make a unique stereo version. Also, the booklet notes are nice, as is the packaging (made to look like the A!nthology). This is not a hugely impressive collection, but a worthy effort nonetheless, which paved the way for (too many) other "Anthology"-type boots, including "Anthology More", "Anthology Extra", and "Anthology 2000". For a better (and pre-Anthology) collection in this vein, check out the first "Artifacts" set.

Well, I like my copy, damn it!
The sound can be a little flaky, but hearing Bad to Me like this makes up for a lot. And I never liked Baby's in Black untill this version - a good bootleg intro.

I've had this disc for sometime now and have loved it.
My beatles knowledge was reasonably extensive(I thought) but I knew nothing about the "outfakes".
I still maintain there is some valuable and worthwhile material here.

Review by: mlucifersamOn 16 Feb 2006 at 12:38 CEST
There is a version of 'Im so Tired'sung by Paul but it's not on here, this is from the 'Get Back' sessions. Pasedena has confused it with the version of 'I Want You' supposedly sung by Paul, I don't think it is. Sounds nothing LIKE Paul.

I was listening to this in the car on a drive yesterday. Could do with a little upgrading now as bits and pieces on here have turned up in better quality, notably the 'Norwegian Wood' and 'That Means A Lot' segments. Also, why they faded out and come back in on the jam at the end of 'She's A Woman' I'll never know (the one where Ringo goes "We got a song and an instrumental there"). Good compilation but, like I said, some bits could do with an upgrade, graft them in from other boots. I hate listening to stuff knowing that they are in better quality on another disc.
