1966 Stereo Album Master

The Monkees
Produced by Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart

Lead & Backing Vocal - Micky Dolenz
Backing Vocals - Tommy Boyce, Ron Hicklin, Davy Jones, Peter Tork
Guitar & Backing Vocal - Wayne Erwin
Guitar - Gerry McGee, Louie Shelton
Organ & Backing Vocal - Bobby Hart
Bass - Larry Taylor
Drums - Billy Lewis
Tambourine - Norm Jeffries

The 1966 stereo mix tries to keep the balance of the instruments by keeping the extra organ to the left (with all the other instruments) until the solo, where it breaks the isolated organ off to the right. Not many choices left after that - backing vocals had to go right to balance the large number of instruments to the left and I think lead vocals are pretty much centered in most Monkee mixes except "Gonna Buy Me a Dog." The original 1966 stereo mix, by the way, has two audible pops - at 1:05 after "such a joke to see the way it hurt" and at 1:18 before "I'm better off alone."
I find the organ solo to be panned extreme right, very little to no organ during the choruses, and absolutely no organ during the middle eight (or middle portion). Left channel: guitar, bass, drums and tambourine far left (tambourine mostly blended with drums but very audible during middle portion and organ solo). Center: lead vocal (double lead on choruses, middle portion, and every second line of verses). Right channel: backing vocals and additional tambourine (choruses only) at the far right; organ solo *very* far right. Note: in this mix there is no organ in the choruses or during the middle portion.
I find the Music Box appearance to have a tad more in the higher frequencies; the tambourine is a little more distinct (in comparison to Rhino '94 or '06 More of).

"Steppin' Stone" would be released as the group's second B-side and also on their second album. This song differs between the single version, stereo album version and mono album version (though all three stem from the same recording). In the stereo version, the track's title is sung just before the second verse, whereas on the single and mono album versions, this segment is left instrumental. Additionally, the stereo version has an edit in the fadeout. The mono album version does not have this edit and therefore has a longer coda. The single also does not have the edit, but it fades the song earlier than the mono album. All Monkees hits compilations through the mid-1990s used the stereo version. Since the 1995 Greatest Hits collection on Rhino Records, most collections use the single version.
Four repeats of "not your steppin' stone" edited out of outro as it fades. Vocals appear in the intro to the second verse.

The 1966 mono mix subdues the organ so it blends really well with the guitar. Vocals in the mono have more reverb. This mix for "She" really jumped out as a great garage single that must have been awesome to hear on AM radio back in the day.

Peter's first released vocal was recorded. He did the vocal in one take. This original Colgems 1966 mono mix is exclusive to this album and can not be found anywhere else.

The 1966 mono mix is approx. 2 seconds longer than the stereo and contains further vocalizing as heard in the 1991 remix.
Tom-tom drum fills are much more buried in the mono mixes.

Sounds noticeably poorer than the mono single mix, but otherwise the mix is very similar.
The fadeout is again unedited but is 12 seconds longer than the single master.

Recorded Oct 28, 30 & 31, 1966 during the More Of The Monkees sessions. Don Kirshner though it sounded too much like "Last Train To Clarksville" so he passed on it and it sat unreleased. In 1969, the Monkees held an additional session for this song on July 24, 1969 for possible release on The Monkees Present album. It was mixed in stereo as well as mono. In the end, the song was once again passed over for album release. The mono mix did appear in the TV series as new music was dubbed into re-run episodes of the TV series in 1969.

Slightly wider stereo mix than the 1969 version but also right-heavy. Stray vocals heard during intro.
