The first 'new' Beatles performance to surface in some time. It's an abysmal audience tape that fails to capture the entire performance. Yet it makes you wish for something better because The Beatles sound like they turned in a good performance (when you can hear them above the crowd, the helicopter, and the jets). The preconcert interview and postconcert 'police report' (Paul had a young girl in his room - shocking!) are fun, especially whenever George teases one of the local disc jockeys.

The abbreviated version of Twist and Shout that opened the show is missing. The concert is part of any core collection.

Just for completists. A better sound than Detroit in ´make as much noise...´.
Review by: ashwomOn 09 Aug 2002 at 21:08 CEST
I haven't heard the disc yet so i cant really give it a rating but i would like to comment on a couple of points made in previous reviews -

1. "Its very very likely that "Twist & Shout" was not performed during this concert" - On what basis do you make this statement Ken Wood? The abbreviated "Twist & Shout" was the standard opening song on the 65 tour (see Shea, Houston, Hollywood Bowl, Atlanta etc)

2. "A better sound than Detroit in "make as much noise as " - i really hope it is. I really hope it's genuine as well because Detroit is a fake made up from previously available concerts !

So, IF this disc is what it purports to be - its definite core collection, IF NOT - its another coaster to put your coffee mug on.

The audio files for this disc we're lifted by the bootlegger from 128/44 mono Mp3's that we're available for download in the alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.beatles newsgroup. The poster - who was 12 years old at the time - of this show taped it using a reel to reel, and the tape had been collecting dust until now when he decided to clean it up with cool edit, and post it in an effort to see if anyone had an upgraded copy of the show. He had no idea, from what I can tell that this was going to be CORE. Btw, the reason Twist & Shout was not included was simply that he did not have the tape recorder switched on in time. All in all this is an mp3 sourced CD, cleverly released with the notion that the source quality is so poor that no one would be able to tell the difference. Here is the info file he posted with the mp3 files:

From:
Subject: Met Stadium Bloomington MN - 08-21-65 - Beatles - 01 - She's A Woman.mp3 (0/8)
Date: Wednesday, February 27, 2002 4:17 AM

Met Stadium Bloomington MN - 08-21-65
Here's the result of my efforts thus far.
Please keep in mind the source. It was an
old reel to reel tape transferred to cassette.
I ran it through Cool Edit Pro to bring the
band up a little over the screaming and EQ'd it
a bit to enhance the hi's. BUT I'll be the
first to admit that I have a tin ear and if
anyone wants to take a better crack at it, I'll
put up the wav file somewhere for the experts.
This, again, is the only recording I am aware of
for this show. My intention is to find out if
there is any better set somewhere. Someone told
me that there is a VHS tape but I've never seen
it. Could it be?

I was a happy 12 year old in 1965 and I won my
tickets in the RC contest that is shown in the
jpg with scans of the tickets. I grabbed these
scans from the web.

Included in the post are the WDGY Press Conference
and police reaction to the after party, which are
(I believe) available elsewhere in better quality,
but should be fun for those who haven't found them.

Sound quality is terrible, but The Lads were into the performance. I like audience recordings (if you're able to understand something!) like this one, 'cause they make you feel as if you were there!
The press conference is funny too, George jokes on the radio stations' names ("Hello, I'm Goeorge from WWWW..."), and he receives his second Rickenbacker 360/12, as a gift from a DJ. (For more info about this and other guitars, try my website! http://digilander.libero.it/beatlesite/360_12%20(1964).htm - only the italian version exists for now, though!)

Twist And Shout was not performed that night because John had a little sore throat and he wasn't able to sing it - I remember listening or reading an interview with him saying this. The kick-off that night was She'a A Woman.

This doesn't seem to be a fake, as you can hear Paul greeting Minneapolis after a song.

Detroit is not a fake recording, it's an audience recording from one of the two Tokyo concerts (probably the 30 june one). Try to listen close to the spoken intros to the songs, and compare them with the WAY better sounding versions available of the Budokan shows!

Was Twist and Shout not released on the Melvin EP "Visit to Minneapols"? I think it was, it was sourced by a television crew (but with low quality). This disc gets an 8 from me for its awesome history, and it makes you feel like you are sitting in the bleachers with the rest of the crazy Beatles fans. Plus I am from Minneapolis!

Hello

I am the unknown person who first uploaded these tracks to Usenet about two years ago. Although I was the "happy 12 year" old who attended the show, I was not the person who taped the show. I want to clarify that for those who may have misunderstood me. I do know the person who did tape the show and, in fact, spoke to him on the telephone today. He is still in posession of the original tape which is not what you are listening to when you hear this CD. This CD is derived from the mp3 files that I created from a second generation cassette copy of the original. I posted the mp3's strictly to share them and to find out if anyone knew of a better rcording of the show. I now know that no other recordings have been discovered. As would be expected, several opportunities have been taken to bootleg this show from my mp3 post. I obtained copies of the press conference and the police interview about twenty years ago from another friend in Minnesota. I am surprised to find out that these versions are not more widely available.

I will respond to any questions.

Thanks

MinnSlim

Regarding Twist and Shout. I say "most likely" because I
do not know for sure. But if you read the booklet there
is a hint: A interview he did the next day (if I remember
correctly) adressing the throat problem and song. Gotta
go back and read myself again... also there were eyewitness
reports and though none of them were 100% sure (again if I
recall correctly) they confirm the song being left out.

PS Sorry, now I wiped my old comment by "adding" a new one.

The sound quality of the concert is not the best but it is listenable and it puts you right there in the stadium. It does sound like a good tight performance from the Beatles, the rhythm section comes through pretty well.
Interesting press conference at the start - one of the DJ's asking questions is a Liverpudlian called John Ravenscroft - better known now as John Peel.

I'm the person who originally taped the Beatle concert at Met Stadium. Thought I would post here to give anyone who cares a chance to get the story on this recording.

I've talked to MinnSlim on the phone a couple of times. Until he first called, I had no clue that my recording might be the only existing copy of the Met Stadium concert. I've got all the Beatle albums and still like listening to them, but I'm not a particularly intense fan and I haven't paid much attention to the bootleg concert market or any of that.

In August of 65, I was a nerdy kid with a cheap Sears tape recorder. I went to the concert with a friend. As I recall, we sat about 8-10 rows from the field, just a bit beyond what would be first base at a ball game.

I didn't tape any of the opening acts because I wanted to save my batteries. I waited until the Beatles were playing to start the recorder, but I did not miss any songs. The Beatles did *not* play "Twist and Shout".

The first song, "She's a Woman" does have a short missing part. The reason for this is, in my stupid excitement, I was pressing down on the lid of my Sears special and I had stopped the reels. I could see this through a little window in the recorder's tin lid.

In the first part of the tape my friend and I were goofing around, making silly noises and watching the little VU meter bounce. It's embarrassing to think that there are all sorts of people listening to this nonsense (and cursing it for spoiling the Beatle noise). But please, cut us a break. We were just kids and had no clue.

I'm sure others have written about the concert itself. I remember the radio DJ's of the day telling everyone that the Beatles wanted everyone to have a good time, but asked that people save the screaming for the times between songs. That seemed to have a great effect. In spite of the poor sound on the tape, my memory is that I heard the music very well. When the songs ended though, it was deafening. My parents were in the parking lot during the concert and they said the same thing. (I wonder if I would have gotten a better recording if I had just left the tape machine with them.)

Another thing I remember about the concert is that &*@#! helicopter. Didn't people realize that they were witnessing history? (smile)

So here we are, almost 40 years later. I recently acquired a working reel-to-reel and have gone through my old tapes. I've located an early copy of the recording, but I'm not sure if it's the original. Unfortunately, it's an old acetate tape in bad condition. The best copy of the recording I have is a cassette version that was made in the early seventies. The MP3's that are circulating are from that copy. A mutual friend of MinnSlim and mine borrowed the cassette and cleaned it up as best they could. MinnSlim and others have copies which probably represent the best quality recording available.

I hope this information is of interest to you Beatle fanatics. (smile) I'm sure some of you are not necessarily going to believe any of this. There's not much I can do about that. But, I will check back here for a while and respond to any questions.

km

Update: I just realized this isn't a discussion forum. (smile) But if you post a question, I'll add an update to this "review".

I like every tape of Beatles concerts that's new! So this one is beautiful. But........... is this still a second generation tape we hear? Did you put the first generation on the net or elsewhere?
