Review by: trevmdsOn 07 Oct 2004 at 02:59 CEST
Have to say that I haven't heard the previous Yellow Dog version of this disc to compare it to, but this volume sounds good to me. Till now I've never heard From Us To You 4, so that was a delight, although I am somewhat surprised that a lot of portions of spoken material seem to be absent... I would have thought that by mid 1964 there would have been lots of home tape recorders running.

One thing I have always liked about the BBC Upgraded series is hearing interview segments intact and in context, with multiple sources used, so that when I hear a familiar bit of Beatle speech suddenly cut to a new bit I've never heard, it's a thrill. I never mind that the audio quality dips slightly during those parts, in fact I like that patchwork feel of it.

The only drawback to this volume in my view (and no fault of the compilers) is having the rather redundant session tape of the From Us To You 4 show as the last third or so of this disc. Although it has been upgraded sometime since it first appeared in the late 70s as a 10 inch red vinyl LP called "From Us To You - A Parlophone Rehearsal Session" (typically misinformed bootleg info from its era!), the session tape doesn't sound much different now from when it did 25 years ago. And guys, PLEASE! Mono recordings should be MONO MONO MONO. I am so sick of being presented with material that is nominally monophonic but is actually 2-track, splashy aizimuth quasi mono. It doesn't take much of a brain to just take the better of the two channels (in this case, the right side) and sum that to mono. For god's sake! Do I have to do EVERYTHING myself??

In answer to the question about the alternate "Hold It!" tracks at the end, the first one where Brian Matthews retorts "well get on it" when John says "the train comes in now" could date to an early 80s radio special called "The Beatles At The Beeb", where he was still around to revoice parts of the interviews and links in order to make them flow better or enable the producers of the show to "get out of" a section with greater ease. The second "Hold It!" comes from a BBC radio program from the 60s for overseas export called "Top Of The Pops", where they'd cull parts of Saturday Club and Top Gear, edit out any overtly topical bits and distribute transcription discs across the world. Here, the dialogue has been edited, and Brian Matthews has revoiced part of the Beatle speech segment to say "political bunch of fellas..here Ringo, have a banana..catch!" Strangely enough, this disc omits his further comments, which say "..and share it with the others while we listen to something else that isn't a record". Kind of odd, considering this material has only been available on bootleg for the last thirty years...
