Reviews

Review by: trevmdsOn 08 Oct 2004 at 06:48 CEST
Once again, I haven't heard the previous Yellow Dog version of this disc, so I can't compare the two. The only difference I can notice is in the track listing - the shifting of what used to be track 1 ("So hold tight"), one of Brian Matthew's overly effusive introductions of the Beatles, to much later in the disc, where it becomes one of the many bonus tracks. The Purple Chick people have evidently identified this little snippet of speech as not being from the original Top Gear broadcast of 26/11/64, but a later re-broadcast (possibly the overseas-use program Top Of The Pops, which incidentally shares the same theme music with Top Gear). They have also added two new bonus tracks - All Together On The Wireless Machine and Cottonfields, from 1967 and 1968 respectively (the former track now in much upgraded sound quality).

All in all, this disc was a very satisfying listening experience, in spite of some of the same music tracks from the 26/11/64 Top Gear being repeated on the 26/12/64 Saturday Club, and some of these repeat tracks being performed again on the 1965 Ticket To Ride radio special. As I stated in my review of Volume 9, I was once again a little surprised to find that quite a few spoken links just aren't available (particularly on the Ticket To Ride radio special), considering that these last few radio appearances would have been heard by millions. One could optimistically assume that the producers of these shows would have kept tape copies of the whole things themselves...

Again though, nice to hear familiar Beatle Speech items restored to their full length using alternate home tape sources patched in. It helps illustrate what dialogue was cut out before it got rejigged for transcription disc. One particularly telling edit comes around a point where Paul is asked about what negative aspects there are to being a Beatle, and he responds that one thing he hates is "people writing rubbish about you". A lower-fi clip from the original UK broadcast is edited in where he continues "...especially in America", before the transcription disc source resumes.

Nice to hear the only available alternate version of "The Night Before", as well as the notorious version of "I'm A Loser" where John ad-libs "Beneath this wig I am wearing a tie" (I knew about this ad-lib, but never had any idea that it was available from a BBC broadcast).

Some interesting session tape stuff here too, and not too much to drag the whole thing down into redundancy.

One minor thing, track 44 "painting Buckingham Palace", which is a brief item of George speaking, is crossfaded underneath the end of Ticket To Ride. There is a clean version of this spoken item available, and that's the version of the track that I used for my own personal version of BBC Upgraded Volume 10.
