The Monkees is the first album by the band the Monkees. It was released in October 1966 by Colgems Records in the United States and RCA Records in the rest of the world. It was the first of four consecutive U.S. number one albums for the group, taking the top spot on the Billboard 200 for 13 weeks, after which it was displaced by the band's second album. It also topped the UK charts in 1967. The Monkees has been certified quintuple platinum by the RIAA, with sales of over five million copies.
The song "Last Train to Clarksville" was released as a single shortly before the release of the album and went to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was the only hit single from the album. "I'll Be True to You" was previously released as a single by The Hollies in January 1965 under the title "Yes I Will".

The photos in the "film strip" on the left side of the back cover are from two episodes of the Monkees' TV show. The first three photos are from "Your Friendly Neighborhood Kidnappers", the other two are from the episode "The Spy Who Came In From The Cool". Also included are brief stats of the Monkees.
Early pressings of the LP cover as well as side 1 of the label featured the misspelled song "Papa Jean's Blues" (Catalog number COM/COS 101). This was soon corrected as "Papa Gene's Blues" (Catalog number COM/COS 101 RE). It was standard practice for RCA to add an "RE" when any one side of a record sleeve had a revision. In addition when the album was reissued in 1969 the Colgems symbol replaced the word "Colgems" on the bottom right-hand corner of the reverse side (Catalog number COS 101 RE2). There were no mono copies issued in 1969 as they were phased out altogether in 1968.

Rhino Handmade released a 100-track super deluxe edition in 2014. Disc 1 features mono and stereo versions and various TV versions. Disc 2 features backing tracks and unreleased versions. Disc 3 features Davy's pre-Monkee solo album David Jones, in both mono and stereo along with some non-album singles. Also included are some pre-Monkee Michael Nesmith singles and some Monkee demos. Unlike previous Rhino Handmade Monkee box sets, this set did not include a 7" vinyl bonus single.

Backing Vocal - Micky Dolenz
Guitar - Don Peake, James Burton, Glen Campbell, Al Casey, James Helms, Peter Tork
Bass - William Pitman
Drums - Hal Blaine, Frank DeVito, Jim Gordon
Percussion - Gary Coleman

Completed in 13 takes, take 5 is selected as the final backing track. Vocals added July 30, 1966. Take 1a being dubbed over take 5 of backing track.
An interesting note is that the only Monkee to play an instrument on this historic first album is Peter Tork- who is brought into Mike Nesmith's productions as a "session" musician. It was Mike's intention to bring the band together as a unit as soon as possible, and initially hoped to see things gel.

Although all four Monkees were given tries at singing lead on "Clarksville", Micky Dolenz sang the lead on the released version with The Candy Store Prophets, Wayne Erwin, Louie Shelton, Tommy Boyce (acoustic guitar) and David Walters (percussion) doing the backing track. Unfortunately, the vocal takes from the other three were erased. The tune of course went on to become the group's first release, single, gold record, and #1

The Monkees
Produced by Michael Nesmith
Engineered by J.L.(assumed to be John London)

Lead Vocal - Mike Nesmith

Saturday July 9, 1966, music tracking and background vocals completed for this song.
Mickey's lead vocal believed to be added on July 27, 1966.

The television mix contains an alternate vocal track, most notable right before the first chorus when Micky sings "so I'm in love with Saturday's Child" - one vocal track contains the word "now" instead of "so". Micky's 'ah' during the solo comes in earlier, a few hits before the next chord (which is where it lands on the album mixes). The track fades out quickly after the end chorus. The mix is not obscured by dialogue or sound effects.
I always thought that the TV Version of Saturday's Child contained the actual Monkees on backing vocals. It really does sound like an awkward blend of Mike and Peter belting out the chorus, and nothing like the backing vocals on the released take.
