In January 2010, Rhino Records' Rhino Handmade website announced that they would be releasing a 3-CD boxed set reissue of The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees album. It was released on February 8, 2010 and is available exclusively online via rhino.com. The set is housed in a 7 inch by 7 inch box with a 3D lenticular cover. It contains the original stereo and U.S. mono versions of the album in miniature vinyl replica sleeves, over 60 demos, rehearsals and outtakes from the original album's sessions, a commemorative pin and a booklet of essays and session information by Monkees historian Andrew Sandoval. The first 1,000 orders include a bonus vinyl single featuring two more unreleased tracks, acoustic versions of "St. Matthew" and "Lady's Baby".

After the sessions for Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. were completed, The Monkees would rarely record music together. The group members, except Peter who would have preferred to remain a true band, decided to produce their own music independently, for the most part. Furthermore, Screen Gems allowed each Monkee time in the recording studios each week. Thus, each of the four members went off on their own and created a vast amount of music incorporating an equally vast amount of styles as well as session musicians. Although Lester Sill (musical supervisor), Shorty Rogers (arranger), and Brendan Cahill (one-time Dolenz limo driver in England and future musical supervisor and manager) assisted The Monkees at their sessions, nearly all tracks recorded and released during late 1967 through 1968 were presented as being produced by "The Monkees".

Disc 3 is sub-titled "The Rarities" and contains mostly newly remixed versions of demos and alternate versions, most of which have never been heard until now.

The Monkees
Produced by the Monkees

Lead Vocal & Electric & Fuzz Guitar - Peter Tork
Backing Vocal - Micky Dolenz
Acoustic Guitar & Harmonica - Lance Wakely
Bass - Ronald Brown

Three more sessions were devoted to this song. This song would not be released until 1991, however it did make a brief appearance in demo form on The Monkees TV series.

Three different mono mixes were made in 1968. Mix 1 featured Micky Dolenz singing lead. Mix 2 featured Peter Tork singing lead. Mix 3 featured an alternate vocal lead by Peter Tork with different lyrics.
Two different versions of mix 2 exist. One with a lower pitch and one with a higher pitch.

This song is the only Birds, Bees song, excepting "Daydream Believer", featuring more than one Monkee! An excellent Nesmith song, this would be completed after two more sessions. The mono and stereo mixes of the song differ slightly (Micky sings the vocals with Mike).

This Peter Tork session featured "Lady's Baby", a song that was recorded over the course of many sessions but was not released until the Missing Links cd in 1988 in a different mix. Recorded Dec 1, 17, 22, 1967, Jan 14, 19, and 24, 1968.

Much clearer than the 1968 mono mix 1

1967 Stereo Alternate Mix
11 Nov 1967
The Monkees
Produced by the Monkees

At first I thought the 1967 alternate stereo mix (drums up/dual vocal version) was missing a couple overdubs. Listening more closely, everything seems to be in there with the acoustic guitar very subdued on the left side and the percussion (shakers/cowbell) mixed low on the right with the drums. The electric guitar seems to be in both channels, with a slight delay making it sound double tracked. In this mix, the bass is on the left with the vocal that made the cut as the lead on the final mixes. The right channel features extremely prominent drums along with the percussion and the alternate vocal (of which the whistling and some of the scat vocals after the second bridge appear to have been incorporated in the final mixes). This strikes me as a mix designed for evaluating certain elements of the multi-track master and not a mix for public consumption.
