Comments
Originally released on vinyl Lp in 1968 by Colgems, Rhino re-issued the Monkees sixth album on cd in 1994. Rhino Handmade would re-issue the album again in 2010 as a 3 disc set with a complete stereo and (for the very first time on cd) mono set plus additional previously unreleased bonus tracks.
What makes this 2010 issue stand out are the bonus tracks, some of which are exclusive to this disc and can't be found anywhere else.

This box set was released in conjunction with The Criterion Collection's Head Blu-Ray & DVD set.

This box set was not limited or numbered, but the estimated production of this set is around 5000 copies.
As of today (January 2014) it is still in print and commercially available.

This Goffin/King masterpiece was one of the few songs written especially for the movie Head. It became The Monkees' eighth single as well with a drone section at the end being included. One more session would be necessary (Feb 28, 1968). Micky later recorded a lullaby version of this song for his first solo album in 1991.

Crossfades from "Opening Ceremony"; ends with the drumbeats before the coda (which is edited out).

The Monkees
Produced by Jack Nicholson and Bob Rafelson

Vocals - Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork
Piano - Michael Rubini

This song was written by Head's cowriters Jack Nicholson and Bob Rafelson. Presented early in the film, it very aptly described what was to come and what not to expect! The four Monkees were in the studio together, recording a song together, singing together (a very rare occurrence). A second session (Aug 3, 1968) was necessary to capture the version we hear in the film and on the soundtrack.

The track starts with dialogue from film. Piano is in the left channel; vocals are in the center and feature a varispeed effect that is not heard in the other mixes. The track ends with the "war chant" from the film (listed on sleeve).

9 Dec 1967
The Monkees
Produced by the Monkees

Vocal, Organ - Michael Nesmith
Guitar - Keith Allison, Bill Chadwick
Bass - Richard Dey, John Gross
Drums - Eddie Hoh

This Nesmith song would become the source of much controversy. Begun in the studio on Dec 9, 1967, it would later be recorded live by the group for the Head movie. However, this studio version would be released on the soundtrack. It would be ready after three additional sessions (Dec 17 1967, Jan 6 1968, Jan 8 1968). Ironically, the originally-released version (studio version) would be the most rare until the reissue cd. The group would remake this song for their album Justus in 1996, with different lyrics.

This mix opens with two organ notes. The distorted guitar and organ are panned left; rhythm guitar and percussion right; vocals center and VERY low in the mix.

On the first session, the instrumental for this song was recorded. Since Micky was in England at the time, it is assumed he recorded the vocal during the August 1, 1968 session for the song. This very beautiful King/Stern song was the B-side to "Porpoise Song" and was featured in a slightly different mix in the movie HEAD.

This seems to be an alternate vintage mix… possibly used in error as part of the album sequence? The flute is in the left channel; main acoustic guitar, additional electric guitar, vocals, drums and bass are in the center channel; lead acoustic guitar in the right channel; and acoustic guitar on left during quiet part of chorus. The lead electric guitar pans around from left to center.

The horns are centered on this mix whereas they're on the left channel on the original stereo mix. It features double tracked vocals from Davy, both different than the original mix. There is no instrumental break before the final verse. Mike sings scat after the final verse. The track keeps going long after the fade, and then segues to the same alternate version of the last verse from the 2001 stereo remix. The piano and vocal are centered during the alternate last verse, and the first two verses repeat after the alternate last verse (like the 2001 stereo remix). Like the movie version, it ends cold.
