From the Doc's announcement:

"By far, the second most requested item in recent times for addition into the Ebbetts catalogue. This is not an upgrade to the previously released "narrow mix" version. (There will be an upgrade to the "narrow mix" version coming soon – a version that actually has both sides mixed narrowly! Please see my earlier e-mail explaining this). This release, however, is the genuine, much-sought after wide mix of the LP, sourced from a near pristine copy of the album provided to me by a great friend to the Dr. Ebbetts project."

AWESOME!!! Thank you Doc E! I grew up with this version of this album. I listened to it recently and confirmed it is an all-wide mix. I found my copy in a Zellers cut-out bin for $3.99 (along with the Capitol "Rarities" LP) back in 1984. (Zellers is a Canadian department store, similar to Wal-Mart) My copy has a purple Capitol label and I believe it is a late 70's-early 80's pressing.

Does anyone know when Capitol of Canada first released "Beatlemania!" in stereo? I believe the very first issues were mono only, as I've never seen a "rainbow label" pressing in stereo. Also, was the Wide/Narrow hybrid the first stereo issue or was the wide mix?

I have a mint cassette version of "Beatlemania!" It is the wide stereo mix. My Cassette copy was manufactured probably sometime in the mid-1980's. This seems to have a WIDER stereo separation than the Doc's vinyl rip. Doc's transfer sounds warmer, while the cassette sounds too bright, but crisp. If the Doc wants to borrow this tape for a possible remaster, he sure is entitled.

Fantastic quality, but I don't care for the EQ on "Till There Was You". Combine this with TTWY from the Blue Box, and you have the definitive WTB album.

So far, this is my favorite edition of the album. The bass, the bass, the bass!!! It is fuller, richer, and more forefront than on any other release I've heard. Paul is such a wonderful, melodic bass player...I think he is overlooked because they never mixed the bass far forward in those days. It wasn't really until Paperback Writer/Rain that the bass was at the same volume as the guitars.

Anyway, I love this issue. I don't know if it is good Dr. magic, or just that the album was EQed differently in Canada...but it is far better (to me) than the PC, or the Dr's MFSL edition. I've not heard the Blue Box, and greatly prefer the stereo edition with regards to comparing to the various mono-releases. I'm one of those rare birds that like the 'wide mix' they did for PPM, WTB, etc. It's an acquired taste I guess.
