From Doc's Dec 2006 Announcement:

Okay ... So what's this? "Live At The Hollywood Bowl ... Again?" Huh?

Well, not unlike the Ebbetts attempt to present the famed Rooftop Concert in a tighter, more presentable way, attempting to envision how Apple *might* have issued such a thing (Last Licks Live), so has Ebbetts done with the Beatles' performance of August 30, 1965 at the Hollywood Bowl. This release is the logical follow up to the "Live At The Hollywood Bowl" project from 1964.

This recording is not quite as good as the 1964 show - both in terms of actual sound quality and (subjectively) in several of the performances. Performance wise, John isn't really at his best - except for perhaps, Dizzy Miss Lizzie, which sounds okay. And take note of the second chorus run-through of "I'm Down." Paul, while sounding good vocally, is about a fourth of a bar ahead of the band (Actually, the band came in too late initially ... whatever). It sounds quite bizarre. That's what you get when you have no "fold back" speakers.

Sound quality-wise, this release is chuck-full of good old fashioned analogue tape hiss - bestill my heart. (I HATE noise reduction). However, I do believe that this recording is among the best sounding of this particular performance. The artwork is completely original, made to replicate (for the most) the general style of the time. The audio contained here is NOT the complete unedited 1965 show - which Ebbetts will eventually make available - but is, instead, a carefully edited version made to represent what such an album *might* have sounded like had Capitol released it, very much in the spirit of the 1964 acetate. Much of the chatter is edited and the presentation is tighter.

Just as with the recently released 1964 Hollywood Bowl album, the Doc's artwork is as usual beautiful and will look great next to the genuine Capitol albums.

The recording itself is a bit messy, with balance problems and a strange stereo image. Performance-wise, it's perhaps not as "electrifying" as the cover says, but still a good show and, IMHO, the best available document from the 1965 tours.

Don't put this one on the top of your "to buy" list if you haven't heard any other DESS releases, and you might want to skip this one if you already have the complete Hollywood Bowl recordings on sets such as the one put out by Midnight Beat. If you can afford the luxury of adding another fine DESS title to your collection you'll definitely enjoy the tighter editing and great artwork.

Rating is for performance and sound quality. It's a definite 10 for presentation.
