Review by: Jim Coburn, jcgolf44@aol.comOn 24 Jan 2000
John Lennon's favorite Beatles live recording. Most of this show is on Anthology 1, in compressed sound quality. This is THE one to get. Yellow Dog's version of this show was mastered from a different source tape and is also of lesser quality.

yeah this is a good live performance, but get real this is not the best, people like it b/c supposedly it is lennon's fav. but i think the hollywood bowl concerts are much better!

i agree with smooth scott r it is definitely not the best. it has its good points...but they can not match "The Tabs" debut release..."Welcome to my Town"

I must agree with Mr. Coburn inasmuch as, in my experience, this is one of the best sounding live recordings. Considering this was 1963, in my view, the recording is phenomenal. I, too, am a Hollywood Bowl fan, and am not terribly interested in the earlier material, which is featured on this disc. Nevertheless, this is a tremendous find that would be a valued addition to the collection of any early period fan.

I just picked up this cd about a week ago,and I think it is great. For being an early concert, the sound is excellent, and there are live versions of songs which don't appear on many Live Beatles CD's (money;Roll over Beethoven,& You really got a hold on me).The perfomances are very tight on this recording, the Beatles were on top of thier game, and I'm glad I finally picked this one up.The interview segment is a bit strange at the end however,it kind of jumps all over the place. If you collect live Beatles recording, then get this one,you won't be disappointed.

This bootleg consists of two concerts done in Sweden in the year 1963 and a couple of short interviews. One of the interviews is quite silly (Paul is asked by some idiotic journalist: “Are you really playing good music or is it because you forgot to have a haircut that you’ve become so popular?”) but the other is a very interesting interview of John, where he recounts his “crazy” performance of “I’m Down” at the Shea Stadium, where he makes George laugh so much that he can hardly play.

As for the concerts, they are of uniformly very high level. Fortunately, we are spared the usual screaming by fans during the performances. The first song in this bootleg is an interesting live version of “I Saw Her Standing There”, though the sound is of poor quality. The introduction to this song is so heavy (and therefore sounds so far ahead of its time), that one might think that it’s “Led Zeppelin” playing if he/she didn’t know who was playing! It’s worthwhile mentioning that George’s guitar solo in that live version of the song is significantly different from the one he played in the “Please Please Me” album. Another interesting track is the cover of Chuck Berry’s “Roll Over Beethoven”; it’s played a bit heavier and faster, and sung by George in a more raucous way than in the officially released version. Also worthwhile mentioning is the cover that the Beatles play of “You Really Got a Hold on Me” because of its intricate vocal harmonies, which the band pulls off without glitches.

I've had this one since '88, and it is still one that I listen to frequently. Plain and simple, this show rocks! This is as close to the Cavern sound as we're likely to hear in such stellar sound quality! HIGHLY recommended. And yes, it sounds better here than on the Anthology release.

Craig-Shmaig: Your trade list has one (1!!!) item in it for God's sake! What do you think about fill in your trade list first if you own all this discs and many more and then review them? Or to delete all your "reviews" for once and look for another place to put your waste all over it!? Would that be a great idea?
