Review by: David Pinkerton, unknownOn 01 Jul 1999
This is quite an interesting set of discs since this contains *Wings* rehearsals of material that later appeared on "Tug of War" and "Pipes of Peace." None of this material has appeared before, with the exception of "Cut Across Shorty," which is also on Vigotone's "Good Times Comin'." I was always under the impression that this came from the '87 "Russian Album" sessions but it clearly is from this 1980 Wings rehearsal. Also, the rehearsals of "Ballroom Dancing" and "Old Man Lovin'" are not the same as the ones on Orange's "Ballroom Dancing."

The first disc opens with some pretty ragged performances. Both "Ballroom Dancing" and "Cage" are poorly performed. "Cage" is surprisingly bad for a song that was recorded not too long before this rehearsal. Next are two equally poor run-throughs of the McCartney/Laine composition "Old Man Lovin'." Next, it is quite interesting to hear a performance of "Sure to Fall," since this is the only known recording since the Beatles "Get Back" era performance. What makes many of these performances sound worse than they really are, are the off-key and sloppy background vocals of Denny Laine. Following "Sure to Fall" is a cover of another Perkins recording called "Movie Magg." It seems by this point that the band is finally getting warmed up (though not for long). The first performance of "Blue Moon of Kentucky" is fairly aimless while the second is considerably quicker and more focused. "Summertime" is a jazzy version with mostly wordless vocals by Paul. "Good Rockin' Tonight" begins in the same jazzy vein as "Summertime" but gradually moves into a straight forward take on "Shake, Rattle and Roll." Next is the familiar take of "Cut Across Shorty." "Singin' the Blues" is not bad but again, not a tight performance. "Johnny B. Goode" is also disappointing, being a slower, bluesy performance.

Not until "Rainclouds" does the band get down to the true rehearsal. I find these rehearsals to be the most interesting of the entire set. Paul is teaching the song to the band, all the while yelling out the chords. This rehearsal is quite interesting because the reading is very *country*! It is quite different from the released version. "Average Person" and "Keep Under Cover" sound pretty close to the "Rude Studio Demos" readings, but with more instrumentation. They're quite enjoyable performances (especially if you like the "Pipes of Peace" album). Again, Paul is teaching the songs to the band at this point (explaining the progressions, etc.). "Ebony and Ivory" is a little painful to listen to as Paul tries to teach the harmony part to Denny. I'm not that fond of the Paul/Stevie Wonder duet (I prefer the Paul solo version) but I'm *really* glad that a Paul/Denny duet never came to be. :) The final "Rainclouds" on the 2nd disc is a short reggae flavored Denny solo version.

One of the disappointments about these discs is that not everything is miked. The vocals are pretty much always up front while the instruments do not seem to be directly miked, but are only being picked up my the vocal mikes. The sound is reminiscent of the "Let it Be" rehearsals although the performances are not *nearly* as bad as those. All in all this is a very interesting set of material. I find that the "Tug of War" and "Pipes of Peace" rehearsals are much more interesting than the sometimes aimless performances on disc 1. Highly recommended to McCartney fans only! :)

Very cool to listen to a home rehearsal tape from the Wings. However, the rough edges of the recording make it for completists only.....

Awesome rehearsal tape. Can't think of another session as interesting. Yes, the vocals are too much up in front but it is not meant for commercial release and won't be close in sound quality. A must pick up!
On a sad note, Macca's creative genuis will not burn as bright after the horrible day in December of that year....
