Review by: MICHAEL, beatnix@metacrawler.comOn 07 Apr 2001
This has better sound quality, I believe, than Twickenham Sessions. Louder and clearer. The cover art is boring, but if you are a collector of the SOUNDS the Beatles made, this is indispensable. Too bad I bought Get Back Journals 2 and Twickenham Sessions before this came out. Now those two sets will be obsolete. I have volume 1 only, but will soon have volumes 2, 3, and 4. Again, avoid Twickenham Sessions and Get Back Journals 2 since this is out.

This 42 cd set is one of the best. The historical significance is uncomparable to anything on the market. You get to hear everything as it is being recorded. Great Beatle music, improv, artist covers, fighting, jam sessions, unreleased Beatles songs, etc. I especially enjoyed the jam sessions and improvs.Sound is a 9.5.Historical value is a 10. The only thing that might distract for some listeners is the beep sound and George Martin interruptions talking about what take it is. To myself that is just a part of knowing you are getting the complete day by day with out all the edits. My set did not come with a box or book nor do I know if there was one ever offered with it.But then again,I cant listen to a box or book. Each cd covers over an hour of a session.Approx 50 hours of listening pleasure.

I just recieved some CDR copies of the Day By Day Series, and I must say I am impressed. This set is awesome. The sound is crystal clear. The Day By Day set is great for that it shows so many songs in their developing stages. Who would have thought that the first songs the Beatles practiced in these Let It Be Sessions were Don't Let Me Down, Let It Down, and I've Got A Feeling? Just to hear the Beatles show each other their songs for the first time and show each other the chords for the first time is pretty cool. The series illustrates how the songs developed and so on.... which is good for aspiring songwriters to hear. Although some people may not like all the silence and/or conversation in between the music, I still think it's a cool thing to listen to. I give Day By Day a 5 star rating.

OK, sound quality's fine. OK, they are of very historical importance. But aren't the Get Back sessions utterly depressing? What we're hearing is a group falling apart, because no one except McCartney really can be bothered. We hear them rehearsing their (not-too-brilliant) new material over and over and over again. They just can't get the right feel, because no one gives a damn. Lennon's too strung out and much more interested in Yoko and delivers his worst performances ever captured on tape, Harrison's a pain with his continuous guitar noodling even through discussions, and Starr just thumps along. McCartney's trying to make SOME sense out of it all and wants them to get it together to deliver some kind of Beatle product. He doesn't seem to realise the game's over. What we get is a million run-throughs of each song considered for the Get Back/Let It Be album, all of them gutless, uninspired, out-of-tune renditions, rather pointless jams and without exception inferior pastiches of previous Beatle songs. To me, this entire series is summed up by their rendition of House Of The Rising Sun, which sounds like a drunk barroom band. Absolutely horrible! It's such a pity that the Beatles' worst sessions were recorded so extensively.......

What a dopey thing I said three years ago about Twickenham Sessions and Get Back Journals becoming obsolete! Of course Day By Day doesn't make them obsolete, because they have quite of bit of B-roll material.
