Some of you may recall this song title from old lists of Beatles outtakes.

The rumor began in the pages of Disc and Music Echo back in 1971. The June 5th issue had this report:

"A bootleg Beatles single, two tracks recorded during the group's Rubber Soul era, will be on the market within the next four weeks, Disc discovered exclusively this week. Both are Lennon & McCartney numbers, put out as a double A-side. But, in order to avoid legal problems, the single may be released under a pseudonym; similar to a 'bootleg' Bob Dylan album which was attributed to the 'Basement singers'. Disc was told: 'Each track lasts about three minutes and they're studio recordings made around the time of the Rubber Soul album. It's genuine original Beatles material, and good quality recordings. The record may be distributed by mail order. And word-of-mouth will sell it OK.' One of the two tracks is understood to be an up-tempo 'Get Back'-type song with Paul McCartney vocals. The other is a harmony number which may be titled 'Baby Jane'."

A week later, they followed up:

"The bootleg Beatles single, exclusively announced in Disc last week, is now expected to be released under the pseudonym 'The Quarrymen'... A major record company is interested in issuing the bootleg single within the next few weeks as a 'white label' release, with the credits rubber-stamped on. The pseudonym is likely to be 'The Quarrymen,' the Beatles' original name when John Lennon first formed the group. Disc was told: 'The record company is very interested in the single. And we'll call them "The Quarrymen," provided the title hasn't been registered. The publishing credits will probably be something like "Lenin and McCarthy."' The record will not now be a double A-side. 'We haven't decided on a title yet, but one track is definitely more commercial. B-side becomes "Maisy Jones."'"

Scott Raile dug up the following clarification, from the October 23rd issue:

"Astute reader Gordon McClure points out that recent single by Nimbo group called "Maisie Jones" same title as reported Beatles "bootleg" single. We have to admit that what we were played as a Beatles bootleg was, in fact, the Nimbo single."

Scott also sent me the URL of a site with both sides of the original Nimbo single, in case you want to hear what fooled the Disc magazine staff back in 1971. It sounds to me like Badfinger with Bee Gees harmonies:

lol, interesting post. I knew nothing of this. But don't think the songs are particularly good, and don't sound very Beatle like at all. Amazing how such rumors get around.
